TITLE: A beautiful world beyond hyperbolic geometry: Anosov representations and higher Teichmüller spaces
Abstract
Taking inspiration from hyperbolic geometry, I will describe the beautiful world of discrete subgroups of Lie groups of higher rank. Along the way we will see connections to geometric structures, dynamical systems, Markov numbers, (non-commutative) cluster algebras, positivity and other interesting mathematical objects.

About the speaker
Anna Wienhard received her Ph.D. in 2004 from the University of Bonn under the supervision of Werner Ballmann and Marc Burger. She is currently a director at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. Her research lies at the intersection of geometry, topology, and dynamical systems. She is world-renowned for her work in higher Teichmüller theory, a rapidly developing field that studies representations of fundamental groups of higher-genus surfaces into Lie groups. She is a member of several academies, including the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. She was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018 and at the European Congress of Mathematics in 2016, and delivered a plenary lecture at the European Congress of Mathematics in 2024.
