AMR Newsletter
July 2024

As we wrap up the 2023-24 academic year, we’re happy to report on the many projects that the Association for Mathematical Research has in progress to support mathematical research and scholarship. Generous donations received over the last year have enabled us to initiate several new projects as well as expand existing endeavors. Here are some highlights.

Cohen Prize

The Journal of Open Mathematical Problems

The Journal of Open Mathematical Problems (JOMP) is being launched by the AMR with funding enabling electronic publication and open access forever. The journal will publish surveys and expositions of important unsolved problems. Each article will give the history of a problem, explain its importance, and review possible methods for attacking the problem. Our hope is that these surveys  will be useful to graduate students and to  researchers working in a mathematical area and in related fields. We plan to publish the first issue of JOMP in Fall 2024. Click here  for more information about the journal.

Report on the general members meeting

The first general members meeting of the AMR was held over Zoom on April 11, 2024, hosted by AMR Board member Alex Kontorovich. During the meeting we reviewed the activities of the Association to date. The meeting included reports from the President, Treasurer and Secretary (i.e. me), as well as updates on current and pending projects. These include three existing and two planned diamond open access journals, online books, lecture series, math research videos, reviews, and research prizes in different areas of mathematics. More details can be found on the AMR website, in the recording of the meeting, and in previous newsletters. We encourage members interested in any of the projects listed above, or in initiating new projects consistent with the AMR’s mission, to contact a Board member. Information on one of the two upcoming journals, the Journal of Open Mathematics Problems is above.

AMR joins the Mathematical Council of the Americas

This month the AMR became a member society of the Mathematical Council of the Americas (MCofA), a network of professional mathematical societies and research institutes based in the Americas. The MCofA was founded in 2011. It is dedicated to promoting the development of mathematics throughout the continent. One of the main activities of the MCofA is the organization of the quadrennial Mathematical Congress of the Americas ( MCA ). The fourth MCA will take place in Miami in July 2025.

In Memoriam: Jim Simons

We were saddened by the death on May 10, 2024 of Jim Simons, a Founding Member of the Association for Mathematical Research. Simons was famous for the brilliance of his mathematics, for his breakthroughs in quantitative finance, and for the generosity of his philanthropy. A tribute to his life and work can be found here. He will be greatly missed.

Donate

Please consider donating to help expand our activities as we build an organization focused on mathematical research and scholarship. You can donate at amathr.org/donate. The AMR is a is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible as allowable by law.
