Prize in the Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence

2024 Prize in the Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence awarded to

Ohad Shamir

The 2024 Prize in the Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence is awarded by the Association for Mathematics Research to Ohad Shamir for his pivotal contributions to the mathematical understanding of deep learning and optimization, as well as his broader impact on machine learning. His results in deep learning range from establishing the vital role of depth to developing innovative techniques for proving sample complexity bounds that do not depend on network size. In optimization, he has introduced fresh insights into foundational algorithms such as stochastic gradient descent. A recurring theme in his work is his ability to bring original perspectives to established areas, revealing new challenges and advancing our comprehension of core issues in developing efficient and effective methods in artificial intelligence.  The prize carries an award of $50,000.

The award will be granted annually, starting in 2024. The selection process is based entirely on the quality of the research produced by the prize candidate. It will be awarded for research performed in the last 10 years in mathematics relevant to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, or in AI research relevant to mathematics. Candidates from anywhere in the world will be equally considered.  The winner of the prize is chosen by a selection committee appointed by the AMR.

Nominations

Nominations for the prize can be made by sending an email to aiprize@amathr.org.  No specific format is required for the nomination or accompanying materials. Submitted nominations will be considered for all future prizes. Nominations should include a brief note describing the qualifications of the nominee as well as the research for which the prize could be awarded. Nominations should be received by September 30, 2024.
